Testing For Hydrogen Gas - Science

In Science, We have been doing Metallurgy Or you could just say Properties Of Metals. In this topic there was a bunch of experiments that we were told to do, well it depends on you that how much you want to do but I've done only one of them Which was Testing For Hydrogen Gas.

And The Acid is called Hydrochloric Acid.

Testing For Hydrogen Gas. hmm...
What do we know about Hydrogen Gas or Testing For Hydrogen Gas??

Well simply, it's just about making the Mg Ribbon (Magnesium) Dissolve in the test tube and the Hydrogen Gas will go into the boiling tube than you need a flaming splint to insert inside the boiling tube to make a POP sound. Yay. And how do you do that?? by adding Acid in a test tube than put the Mg Ribbon inside that test tube and then put the boiling tube upside down and hold it, grab your other test tube an put underneath the boiling tube then push it up so the Hydrogen Gas can go in Boiling Tube. Once the Mg is dissolved use flaming splint and insert into the boiling tube and it will go POP!!. Sorry, I'm bad at explaining.

Aim: To show that Hydrogen Gas is produced when a metal reacts with acid.

Equipment: A test tube, a boiling, Bunsen burner, wooden splint, a bottle of acid, a piece of metal, safety glasses.

Method: 1. Light Your Bunsen burner
              2. Add your sample of metal to your test tube. Add 2mL of acid.
              3. Carefully invert the boiling tube above the test tube containing the metal and acid.

Now, this is just a demonstration of what to do I've got photos and videos to show you now...

In this photo, you can see the setup that my friend and I did and another thing you don't really need a Bunsen burner you can just use a lighter to light the splint.

Over here it's just showing the Metal inside the test tube and how big the metal is supposed to be I don't know if you can see it properly If you cannot then my bad.

In here as the metal was inside the test tube we added 2mL of acid into the test tube and then the metal started to dissolve and the Hydrogen Gas started to release. Then once that happened we just invert the boiling tube above the testing tube containing metal and acid.

I'm going to give an example in word equation and other ways.

Magnesium + Hydrochloric Acid → Magnesium Chloride + Hydrogen
In  this equation, we can see that Mg reacts with 2HCl and forms or produce MgCl2 and reacts with H2

Here is another similar equation of this...

Mg + 2HCl → MgCl2 + H2

What happened here is, Mg Has 2+ electrons to give to Hydrogen (H-Cl) and to make 2HCl Mg have to give both of its electrons to HCl, Mg has 2+ positive electrons
Also, I have a video to show you guys what does it sounds like and there will be people talking in the background so very sorry.
And another thing the video is a bit big so I cannot upload it on my Blog page but I'll put down the link so you guys can go ahead and look at it.
HERES THE LINK⇒ Testing For Hydrogen Gas Vid!!!!

What Am I learning??
I'm learning about Hydrogen Gas but not only that also about what can be made by Lead, Aluminum, Tungsten, etc.

How does this work show my learning??
It shows what I have done on this topic and what type of blog I'm doing on this topic.

What Am I wondering??
I'm wondering what happens when you add a lot of metals and acid in a test tube than invert above the boiling tube above test tube than light the splint and put inside the boiling tube will the POP sound or Noice will Go Louder or Won't go louder?
